Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing

• The sash drifts closed or won’t stay at half-mast. This usually means the balance system has lost tension, but in CWS units it often traces to installation: the jamb liner was not plumb when the window was set, so the balance carries side load it was never designed for. We measure jamb deflection before quoting a balance replacement.
• Visible gap at the meeting rail or lock stile. The interlock gasket compresses over time, but if the gap is uneven - tight at the top, open at the bottom - the frame has racked during installation or the sill pan was not bedded level. We check with a 4-foot level and note the reading on your written scope.
• Water staining on the interior sill after a West Palm Beach downpour. CWS windows drain through weep slots in the sill track. If the installer reversed the sill pan or omitted end dams, water backs up and enters through the rough opening. DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check three things: whether the weep slots are blocked with debris, whether the lock keep has loosened, and whether the sash lift handle is intact. These require no tools beyond a vacuum crevice attachment and a Phillips screwdriver.

Everything else carries risk. Removing a CWS sash to access the balance system requires compressing the tilt latches while supporting the full sash weight - on a 36-by-72 impact-rated unit, that’s over 50 pounds of glass and frame. Dropping it damages the glazing, the sill track, or your foot. Re-setting the frame plumb requires a level, shims, and knowledge of the fastener schedule: too tight and the vinyl distorts; too loose and the sash rattles in a hurricane. We do not recommend DIY on impact-rated 8800 series - the installation is part of the product’s Miami-Dade NOA certification, and an unpermitted modification voids the rating and your insurance coverage.
